If your baggage contains some sailors’ superstition, discover the beauty of the BVI instead. Unspoiled sandy beaches, tangled mangroves and reefs teaming with jewel coloured fish. Setting sail from the harbor of Road Town and exploring alluring places with names like Pelican Island, Dead Chest, Mosquito Island and Carrot Rock. Everyone who steps aboard is captivated by her charm and splendor. You are bound to fall in love with the beauty of polished teak decks (reclaimed from and old dance floor) magnificent saloon and seemingly endless billowing brown sails.
Running your hands along her prow, feeling the weathered, yet warm wood, you can tell she has had a difficult, yet clairvoyant past. She started out as a topsail schooner built in over 100 years ago and she spent the first 13 years of her life as “Frederich”, after her captain.
Since then, she has had many titles , from “Sam” the schooner, to “Merry”, the cargo ship, to “Rose Marie” the motor driven fishing ship; criss-crossing the Baltic and North Sea and running aground off the Swedish coast in between. If you believe in sailing superstitions, her ever changing name could have been the cause of the devastating fire in 1970. After narrowly escaping the scrap yard and ending her days as an English pub, she was lovingly transformed into a brigantine and dubbed “The Eye of the Wind”
The Eye of the Wind has had many years of adventure, from circumnavigating the globe as the flagship for “Operation Drake” , starring in films such as “Blue Lagoon and “ The Perfect Storm”, winning awards for the most beautiful nautical photo subject and leading the longest ever sailing boat parade on her 100th year anniversary.
In 2000, she was fully restored and became the boat that will captivate your heart today. Her owners equipped her with the latest technology and electronics for navigation and comfort, using precious woods, brass and quality workmanship to preserve the character and distinctive atmosphere. A sail control system left out on purpose, meaning the 750 square meters of sail are still raised and lowered by sheer muscle power, as was intended.
Now she is owned by Forum Train&Sail, doing cabin and exclusive charters, themed events and management training. A unique sailing school, she teaches guests the true meaning of adventure charter and captivates the hearts and imaginations of those aboard; keeping the spirit of sailing alive.
