Ocean Crossing from Vava’u to Savusavu Exploring Remote Islands Reefs and Pacific Cultures
Discover an extraordinary South Pacific sailing expedition that connects the islands of Tonga and Fiji across the open waters of the Coral Sea. This adventure voyage departs from Neiafu Harbor in the Vava’u island group of northern Tonga and sails westward toward Savusavu Bay on the island of Vanua Levu in Fiji, covering approximately four hundred fifty nautical miles through one of the most fascinating sailing regions in the Pacific.
The journey begins in the scenic harbor of Neiafu, a lively sailing hub surrounded by lush green mountains and traditional island villages. Before leaving the Tongan archipelago the route includes a visit to one of the region’s remarkable sea caves, often described as a place where visitors can hear the sound of “Neptune’s breath.” The cave can be explored by snorkeling, free diving or scuba diving in the clear turquoise waters.
Tonga is renowned for its rich marine biodiversity and pristine coral reefs. The surrounding waters offer excellent opportunities for snorkeling, diving and wildlife observation. Guests may encounter dolphins, rays, sea turtles and, during certain seasons, humpback whales that migrate through these tropical waters. The dramatic coastline of Vava’u also features sheltered bays and volcanic landscapes formed by ancient craters now connected to the sea.
After exploring the islands of Tonga the expedition sets sail across open ocean following the steady trade winds that blow across the South Pacific. The passage to Fiji typically takes several days of sailing, offering the experience of a true blue water voyage across remote ocean waters. Along the route the vessel may pass through volcanically active areas where new islands occasionally emerge from the sea before slowly eroding again.
The first islands encountered upon approaching Fiji belong to the remote Lau archipelago, a region where traditional island life remains deeply preserved. Visitors to remote Fijian villages are welcomed according to local customs, including the Sevusevu ceremony, a traditional offering presented to the village chief as a sign of respect.
Fiji is known for its vibrant and diverse cultural heritage. Local communities often gather around the traditional kava bowl for evening conversations, storytelling and social gatherings that reflect the relaxed rhythm of Pacific island life. Fijian cuisine features fresh fish, tropical vegetables and coconut based dishes often cooked using traditional methods with banana leaves and hot stones.
As the voyage continues westward the mountainous island of Vanua Levu appears on the horizon. The official arrival point is Savusavu Bay, a beautiful natural harbor surrounded by rainforest and known for its pearl farms and calm anchorages. The surrounding region offers opportunities for hiking through tropical forests, exploring waterfalls and experiencing the natural landscapes of northern Fiji.
The sailing route between Tonga and Fiji combines open ocean navigation, coral reefs, volcanic islands and vibrant Pacific cultures. This expedition offers a rare opportunity to explore remote islands, encounter diverse marine wildlife and experience the traditions of two remarkable South Pacific nations while sailing across one of the world’s most scenic ocean regions.

She is crewed by a multicultural team with a contagiously positive vibe together with Captain Clemens Oestreich, who has skippered vessels for over 100,000 miles during the last 20 years, while raising his 5 children at sea. Infinity is built to be a world-traveling base for adventure and environmental work, forming a beautiful home with unique history and personality. The living quarters are designed with comfortable guest cabins and large communal spaces including an airy saloon, cinema, and extensive deck space. To date, over 200 crew members from all around the world have been part of many extraordinary adventures.
