Join us for a 350 nautical mile sail from northern Tonga to American Samoa. This short voyage is especially ideal for gaining sailing experience during an offshore crossing. We expect to be at sea for approximately 3 days and starlit nights. Daily sailing classes are available to deepen the novice mariner’s knowledge of navigation, ships, and the sea.
We set sail from Neiafu Harbor in Tonga’s northern island group Vava’u. Before departing for the offshore part of the voyage, we will stop at a magical sea cave in which one seems to feel and hear “Neptune’s breath.” This cave can be explored both by scuba or just by free diving. Soon after we will set sail and hope for steady trade winds on the beam and a comfortable yet exciting journey. We may be able to stop along the way at the island of Niuatoputapu with its turquoise lagoon and wonderful snorkeling.
Both Tonga and American Samoa have a lot to offer.
Tonga’s turquoise intercoastal waters are littered with gorgeous reefs and little islands. Whether it be the wildlife of the deeper waters, the vibrant coral reefs, or shell and coral sprinkled islands, you are sure to love Tonga’s beauty. The Tongan people are warm and enjoy socializing. You can meet the locals around the kava bowl, listen to songs and guitar, and just relax into the island’s pace of life. There’s phenomenal diving, snorkeling, and surfing to be found, and fantastic marine wildlife to see including humpback whales, dolphins, and vibrant coral reefs with a multitude of fish species.
American Samoa, lush with green jungle mountains, has another community of fine people to meet. Samoans love to sing and do so very beautifully in the local churches. The tattoo culture is rich with the traditional artistry and techniques, where the patterns and shapes are bold, black, symbolic, and fitted to the curves of the body. The artists still make their own instrument to apply a traditional stick-poke tattoo. You can also explore the beautiful diving, snorkeling, and nature. There is endless hiking in gorgeous jungle mountains with incredible views of the bays and forest. We can explore the market with its fruit, carvings, colorfully printed fabrics, and tasty fresh fish.
This voyage with Infinity is short, so we recommend for you to add extra days before and after the sail to have sufficient time on the islands. Alternatively, add trips with Infinity to continue the journey for the long haul.
The detailed day-to-day itinerary will largely depend on the weather. We are free to go with the flow.

Infinity is a fully-equipped 36 meter sailing expedition vessel on an ongoing voyage since 2003. She has traveled to over 2 dozen countries in both the North and South Pacific and in Southeast Asia and she has sailed amongst icebergs, penguins, and orcas in the Ross Sea, Antarctica, and Patagonia. She is crewed by a multicultural team with a contagiously positive vibe together with Captain Clemens Oestreich, who has skippered vessels for over 100,000 miles during the last 20 years, while raising his 5 children at sea. Infinity is built to be a world-traveling base for adventure and environmental work, forming a beautiful home with unique history and personality. The living quarters are designed with comfortable guest cabins and large communal spaces including an airy saloon, cinema, and extensive deck space. To date, over 200 crew members from all around the world have been part of many extraordinary adventures. They dove with wales and sharks, participated in environmental outreach and even battled deep-sea oil drilling companies. Infinity is open to guests for the first time this year.
