Your sailing trip
Join the Infinity Expedition and sail from Tonga to Fiji in the Trade Winds, get to know the people, islands, and reefs during the journey.
We depart from Neiafu Harbor in Tonga’s northern Vava’u island group. Before setting sail for the offshore part of the voyage, we will stop at a magical sea cave in which one seems to feel and hear “Neptune’s breath.” This cave can be explored both by scuba or just by free diving. Soon after we will be out in the ocean and hoping for steady trade winds from behind and a comfortable yet exciting journey.
Tonga has a lot to offer. This is some of what you can look forward to upon arrival:
Scuba, free dive, snorkel, or spearfish in the turquoise waters and beautiful reefs.
Tonga’s marine wildlife is well known for its rich diversity. You have a good chance to see dolphins, humpback whales, rays, and turtles, just to name a few. Enjoy the scenic harbor of Port Refuge, Vava’u. The port is a deep cut waterway, remnant of an ancient volcano crater now open to the ocean.
The nice little town of Neiafu is nestled in the side of the green mountains with lovely restaurants and handicraft stores. We expect our passage to Fiji to be a pleasant 4 days and nights sail. We’ll pass an area west of Tonga that is volcanically very active, and there is at least one island that appears and then disappears again from time to time. With luck, we’ll get a glimpse! The first islands of Fiji we’ll pass are part of the still very traditional Lau group. When we visit remote Fijian islands we have to meet with the chief and do a Sevu Sevu local welcome ceremony, and guests are usually welcome to participate.
Fiji is very diverse in its cultural experience. The islanders love to sit around the big kava bowl late into the night so if your pace is relaxed, those long gatherings can be very enjoyable and are often filled with stories and laughter. Traditional Fijian food consists of all kinds of dishes like fresh fish, vegetables and more with fresh coconut cream wrapped in banana leaves and slow-cooked on hot rocks. Half of Fiji’s population originates from India so they also make an important part of the vibrant society and bring their own cultural heritage.
Some reefs of Fiji have spectacular drop off dives, where we’ve sighted whales and dolphins many times. Eventually, Vanua Levu will show on the horizon, a mountainous island covered in jungle. Our official arrival port is in Savusavu Bay among the pearl farms. You can buy pearls and enjoy a hike or two in the stunning rainforest.
To see a colorful mix of unique, diverse cultures and beautiful nature, sail with us from Tonga to Fiji.
You could spend a year on the islands and still wouldn’t have seen everything. To make the most of what Samoa and Tonga have to offer, we recommend giving yourself plenty of extra time outside of the voyage or combine Infinity trips for a longer stay. We will have a wonderful journey filled with a wealth of unforgettable experiences, but we will NOT have enough time to do everything suggested above! If your heart is set on some specific activity, be sure to tell us about it so we can do our best to create the opportunity.
The detailed day-to-day itinerary will largely depend on the weather. We are free to go with the flow.

Infinity is a fully-equipped 36 meter sailing expedition vessel on an ongoing voyage since 2003. She has traveled to over 2 dozen countries in both the North and South Pacific and in Southeast Asia and she has sailed amongst icebergs, penguins, and orcas in the Ross Sea, Antarctica, and Patagonia. She is crewed by a multicultural team with a contagiously positive vibe together with Captain Clemens Oestreich, who has skippered vessels for over 100,000 miles during the last 20 years, while raising his 5 children at sea. Infinity is built to be a world-traveling base for adventure and environmental work, forming a beautiful home with unique history and personality. The living quarters are designed with comfortable guest cabins and large communal spaces including an airy saloon, cinema, and extensive deck space. To date, over 200 crew members from all around the world have been part of many extraordinary adventures. They dove with wales and sharks, participated in environmental outreach and even battled deep-sea oil drilling companies. Infinity is open to guests for the first time this year.
