Kaskazi, drawn on the traditional double Polynesian canoe that has permitted for thousands of years the communication between the various islands of the Pacific Ocean, is the biggest sailing catamaran along the East coasts of Africa. At moment the only charter yacht in the Lamu archipelago.
Designed and followed in its achievement from James Wharram, it is the last and major of a long series of studies. More than 3000 catamarans signed by this guru of the sea life, sail secure in all the waters of the world.
The first “Pahi 63 ” Spirit of Gaia, built by James, has faced the trip around the world through the tropics with the same Mr. Wharram and his wife Hanneke Boom, eternally friends of adventure, now in their eighties.
The marine museum of Oakland, has been dedicated a whole section to this project and to J.W. ‘s studies on Polynesian catamaran sailing art, when they passed in new Zealand. Spirit of Gaia now works in Greece.
Only other 5 Pahi 63 have been realized, pride of their skippers and crew.
I remember “Sting Ray” that works in Sicily; “Big Cat” in England; “Noha”, Kaskazi’s twin that, worked with her sister in Madagascar, and then has circumnavigated Cape of Good Hope, sailed in Caribbean and South Africa, and now is in Portugal; Nirvana chartering in Turkey.
We believe that “Kaskazi”, built in South Africa with the known use of the best tie system and decorated by the fantastic craftsmen in incisions at Lamu, is the best achievement of this splendid project and, without any doubt, the most romantic one. Try it under the moonlight!!!
