Cultural Sailing Experience in Milne Bay during the Traditional Canoe Festival
Experience one of the most vibrant cultural celebrations in Papua New Guinea with a unique sailing journey to the Canoe and Kundu Festival in Alotau, located in the Milne Bay region. This annual event celebrates the maritime traditions and cultural heritage of the island communities of eastern Papua New Guinea.
Canoes and Kundu drums have long been essential elements of daily life and ceremonial traditions throughout Milne Bay and the surrounding archipelagos. Traditional canoes, often referred to as war canoes, are carefully crafted from selected hardwoods using techniques passed down through generations. The colorful patterns and decorative designs painted on each canoe represent the identity, tribe and region of the communities that built them.
During the festival, beautifully decorated canoes gather to form a ceremonial convoy before sailing together toward Alotau for the opening celebrations. The event brings together communities from across Milne Bay and the eastern Papuan region, creating a spectacular display of traditional navigation, craftsmanship and island culture.
Visitors can witness traditional dance performances presented by cultural groups from different islands, each wearing distinctive costumes and performing ancestral songs and rituals. The festival also includes canoe races, cultural competitions, local craft exhibitions and performances of traditional and contemporary music.
From the vantage point of the expedition vessel, guests can observe the impressive fleet of ceremonial canoes as they assemble near Wagawaga Island before the main celebrations begin. This unique perspective allows travelers to experience the energy of the festival while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding islands and waters of Milne Bay.
The Canoe and Kundu Festival offers an extraordinary opportunity to discover the traditions, music and maritime heritage of Papua New Guinea while exploring one of the most culturally rich regions of the South Pacific.

Infinity is a fully-equipped 36 meter sailing expedition vessel on an ongoing voyage since 2003. She has traveled to over 2 dozen countries in both the North and South Pacific and in Southeast Asia and she has sailed amongst icebergs, penguins, and orcas in the Ross Sea, Antarctica, and Patagonia. She is crewed by a multicultural team with a contagiously positive vibe together with Captain Clemens Oestreich, who has skippered vessels for over 100,000 miles during the last 20 years, while raising his 5 children at sea. Infinity is built to be a world-traveling base for adventure and environmental work, forming a beautiful home with unique history and personality. The living quarters are designed with comfortable guest cabins and large communal spaces including an airy saloon, cinema, and extensive deck space. To date, over 200 crew members from all around the world have been part of many extraordinary adventures. They dove with wales and sharks, participated in environmental outreach and even battled deep-sea oil drilling companies. Infinity is open to guests for the first time this year.
