Your sailing trip

Komodo National Park sailing experience

This itinerary is perfect for a visit to the World Heritage Komodo National Park. The itinerary provides great variation with walking, diving, snorkelling, wildlife and just relaxing at some of the most spectacular white sand beaches anywhere in the world.

Indonesia is the world’s largest island archipelago. The 17,000 islands of Indonesia stretch in a vast 5200km crescent shaped sweep from Sumatra in the Indian Ocean to Halmahera in the Pacific. The number of islands that makes up Indonesia almost defies comprehension – if you started visiting Indonesian islands tomorrow at a rate of 1 island each day then it would take you until the year 2056 to get round them all.

the Indonesian landscape is dominated by over 400 volcanoes of which approximately 130 are presently active. Literally thousands of the Indonesian Islands exemplify the perfect uninhabited “castaway island”: tranquil blue ocean, white sandy beaches fringed by palms backed by tropical jungle with a gigantic mountain or volcano reaching to the clouds behind.

Itinerary

Day 1
Embarking in Labuan Bajo
Arrive in Labuan Bajo on the early morning flight from Bali. Transfer to the yacht and set sail for the Komodo World Heritage Site. Great sailing to Lehok Gringgo on Rindja Island. This is a great place for walking with a good chance of seeing Komodo Dragons.
Day 2
Pillar Rock and Nusa Kode
Morning sail to Pillar Rock on nearby Pulau Padar for a spectacular morning dive followed by lunch off the white sand beach. Afternoon sail to Nusa Kode at the southern end of Rindja anchoring in ancient volcano crater.
Day 3
Nusa Kode
Spend the day at Nusa Kode. This is the very best place to see Komodo Dragons during your trip. Nusa Kode is one of our favourite places in the Komodo National Park with great walking, fabulous snorkelling, great kayaking and a choice of 6 spectacular dive sites. This is a superb area for wildlife viewing by kayak. Komodo Dragons, Timor deer, wild boar, macaque monkeys and palm civets are all regular visitors to the shoreline.
Day 4
Lehok Serd
Morning sail to the southern end of Komodo island for a dive at “Manta Alley” followed by lunch in an anchorage that looks like the film set from Jurassic Park. Short evening sail to the beautiful protected bay at Lehok Serd.
Day 5
Pulau Padar
Great beam reach sailing in the morning up to Pulau Padar. Magnificent beaches, superb hill walks and great snorkelling. Afternoon sail to Tatawa Kecil This area has some of the best snorkelling and diving in Komodo National Park but timing is everything as the currents can be ferocious. This is a great area for seeing manta rays while snorkeling.
Day 6
Gili Lawa islands
A 1 hour downwind sail takes us to the Gili Lawa islands. There are around 10 great dives in this area and stunning snorkelling. Our favorite here is to walk up one of the hills of Gili Lawa Darat to watch the sunset over the top of Sangeang volcano.
Day 7
Sabala Besar
Morning dive or snorkel at Gili Lawa Laut followed by an exhilarating sail in smooth water to Sabala Besar. Some of the best snorkelling we have seen anywhere off a perfect white sand beach. Overnight at Sabala Besar with a short 1 hour back to Labuan Bajo the following morning in time to catch the early flight to Bali.

Cruise activities and tips

Travel activities

Cruise activity Indonesia Fishing

Indonesia Fishing

Sadly many of the more populated parts of Indonesia have been destroyed by dynamite fishing. However, with 17,000 islands spread over such a vast area there are still many parts of Indonesia that have have thriving fish populations and enormous fish. In this environment is is essential to fish responsibly. We keep small numbers of fish for eating but the majority of fish we catch are returned to the ocean unharmed.

Cruise activity Indonesia Scuba Diving

Indonesia Scuba Diving

While many countries use the rather tired cliché of “the best diving in the world” in their tourist literature, Indonesia can reasonably and quietly lay claim to this title. The “Raja Ampat” National Park in West Papua is considered by Conservation International as having the highest marine diversity on the planet and this view is also supported by National Geographic magazine. Komodo, Sulawesi, Alor, Wetar and the Banda islands are equally spectacular for underwater explorers. Indonesia’s diving potential has hardly been scratched – there are thousands of offshore reefs, volcanoes, pinnacles and seamounts that have never been dived before. Even experienced divers will find themselves excitedly paging through reference books trying to figure out what they have just seen underwater. Asia is fully equipped for Scuba diving for up to 8 guests. Scuba diving is charged at Euro 40 per diver per dive. This is structured so guests have the flexibility to decide during their charter how much they wish to dive. Guests only need to bring along proof of dive qualification for insurance purposes and their own dive computer/watch. Each dive is led by a highly experienced and knowledgeable dive leader. We take great pride in the quality and safety of our dive operation which is why we are repeatedly chosen by the UNDP / GEF for their remote area dive survey charters in South East Asia. We provide excellent surface support, full DAN safety equipment aboard the yacht and an emergency deploy buoy for each diver.

Cruise activity Indonesia Surfing

Indonesia Surfing

The next landmass south of Indonesia is the Antarctic. From June to September each year huge winter storms thousands of miles away in the Southern Ocean generate enormous swell that breaks on Indonesia’s south and west facing shorelines. This large swell arriving from almost the opposite direction to the prevailing wind creates magnificent conditions for surfing. The Mentawai islands, Sumatra and the Nusa Tenggara islands of Bali, Lombok and Sumbawa are now famous for their great surfing. Further afield, Doa, Raidjua and Halura are less well known islands that offer world class surfing. As with everywhere else in Indonesia, arriving by yacht allows you to get to places that others can only dream of.

Travel organizer tips

How to get to Indonesia ?
Many of the above commercial flight operators frequently have delays, cancellations or overbook the aircraft. Most domestic flights also only offer tourist class seats.

For reliable, efficient and VIP service within Indonesia it is worth considering a private aircraft charter. This also ensures you fly exactly when you want to instead of lengthy waits at airports.
Visas
All visitors to Indonesia require tourist visas. The nationals of 63 countries are granted 30 day visas on arrival. All other nationalities need to apply in advance to an Indonesian Embassy or Consulate.

See the Indonesia Embassy website for detailed information.
