Adventure Sailing through the Lusiade Archipelago Remote Islands and Volcanic Landscapes of Papua New Guinea
Discover one of the most remote and fascinating regions of the South Pacific with an expedition cruise across Papua New Guinea. This adventure sailing journey begins in Alotau and explores the pristine islands and reefs of the Lusiade Archipelago before continuing north toward the volcanic landscapes of Rabaul.
The voyage begins after the traditional Canoe and Kundu Festival in Alotau, one of the most important cultural celebrations in Papua New Guinea. From here the route sails east through the isolated islands and coral reefs of the Lusiade Archipelago, a rarely visited region known for its untouched tropical landscapes and exceptional marine biodiversity.
These remote islands offer extraordinary opportunities for snorkeling, diving and wildlife encounters. The coral reefs surrounding the archipelago are among the richest in the Pacific Ocean, home to manta rays, reef sharks, sea turtles and colorful tropical fish. With some luck visitors may even encounter dugongs moving slowly through the seagrass beds. The region remains largely unexplored by tourism, making it a remarkable destination for nature lovers and adventure travelers.
Beyond the marine environment, the islands of Papua New Guinea are known for their deep cultural traditions. Local communities maintain ancestral customs where ceremonial dances, colorful costumes and ritual celebrations continue to play an important role in daily life. Visitors may experience traditional village life and observe the unique cultural heritage that makes Papua New Guinea one of the most diverse regions in the world.
The expedition then sails north toward Rabaul, once an important colonial town located on the island of New Britain. Today the area is famous for its dramatic volcanic landscapes formed by powerful eruptions that transformed the region. Visitors can explore lava fields, climb volcanic ridges and admire panoramic views over Simpson Harbor and the surrounding bays shaped by volcanic activity.
The waters around Rabaul also contain several historic shipwrecks and spectacular reef systems, making the area particularly attractive for experienced divers. Deep seamounts, vibrant coral formations and diverse marine life create exceptional underwater exploration opportunities.
This Papua New Guinea expedition cruise offers a rare chance to explore remote islands, discover traditional Melanesian cultures and experience extraordinary marine environments. Each journey adapts to weather conditions and guest interests, allowing flexibility to visit the best natural sites, dive locations and cultural encounters along the route.

Infinity is a fully-equipped 36 meter sailing expedition vessel on an ongoing voyage since 2003. She has traveled to over 2 dozen countries in both the North and South Pacific and in Southeast Asia and she has sailed amongst icebergs, penguins, and orcas in the Ross Sea, Antarctica, and Patagonia. She is crewed by a multicultural team with a contagiously positive vibe together with Captain Clemens Oestreich, who has skippered vessels for over 100,000 miles during the last 20 years, while raising his 5 children at sea. Infinity is built to be a world-traveling base for adventure and environmental work, forming a beautiful home with unique history and personality. The living quarters are designed with comfortable guest cabins and large communal spaces including an airy saloon, cinema, and extensive deck space. To date, over 200 crew members from all around the world have been part of many extraordinary adventures. They dove with wales and sharks, participated in environmental outreach and even battled deep-sea oil drilling companies. Infinity is open to guests for the first time this year.
