Day4
Panarea Island
Breakfast and morning dedicated to circumnavigation of Panarea, the smallest of the Aeolian Islands. the early Greek (VI-V century BC.) called it PANARAYAS, that means "The great". This name is due to its extention, the 'geological activity and eruptive has profoundly changed the appearance of the island over thousands of years because of the constant earthquakes that have literally produced a collaps of much of the volcanic complex in the sea, so much so that even today the island continues to slowly sink under the water level (about an inch every 10 years). Panarea was in fact for a long time the largest of the Aeolian Islands, and this is evidenced by the presence in the north-east of the island of a series of islets (Basiluzzo, Spinazzola, Lisca Bianca, Lisca Nera, Bottaro and Dattilo). The voulcanic activities are still visible on the island, where you can see the "fumaroles" of vapors that rise through the cracks between the rocks and where the water reaches high temperatures. You can smell an intense Sulfur smell that rises from the depths marine. Last curiosity for fans of diving is the presence in Basiluzzo of a small port and a terrace of a Roman villa on the sea floor, evidence of a time when the island was much more extended than today.
