Four nights sailing the coral islands of San Blas, moving every day between reefs, uninhabited cays and the villages of the Guna people.
San Blas, called Guna Yala by the people who live there, is a scatter of more than three hundred islands along the Caribbean coast of Panama. Most are uninhabited, some hold a handful of palms and nothing else, and the whole archipelago belongs to the Guna, an indigenous nation that governs itself and has kept the sea around it almost untouched. It is one of the few places left in the Caribbean that feels genuinely remote while still being reachable in a morning from a capital city.
This is a sample itinerary rather than a fixed package, and the price follows the same logic. Four nights cost €1,200 per person with everything on board included, and every additional night is €225 per person: five nights €1,425, six nights €1,650, a full week €1,875. Cabins are sold one by one and the boat sails even for a single guest, or the whole boat can be taken exclusively for up to four people, €4,800 for four nights and €900 for every night beyond. Four nights is the shortest stay available, because it is the minimum that reaches the outer cays.
The sailing is short-legged and constant. Distances between anchorages run from two to a dozen miles, the trade wind blows steadily from the east and the water inside the barrier reefs stays flat. The boat rarely spends two nights in the same place: you sail in the morning, anchor by early afternoon, and the rest of the day belongs to the water. There are no marinas anywhere in the archipelago, so every night is at anchor, often with no other boat in sight.
From the deck the horizon is a line of low green islands and reef edges that turn from turquoise to deep blue. Below the surface the reefs carry soft and hard coral, nurse sharks resting under the ledges, eagle rays, angelfish, trumpetfish, starfish the size of a hand and a great many lobsters.
Ashore, the village islands are packed with cane and palm houses and the Guna receive visitors on their own terms. You can walk through a village in twenty minutes, buy a mola stitched by hand, or follow a path on the mainland through mango, avocado and banana trees. The islands charge a small landing fee, already settled on your behalf, so there is nothing to negotiate and nothing to pay.
Life on board is simple and social. The boat is sailed by the couple who live aboard year round with their young daughter, born and raised at sea and very much part of the crew. Meals come out of the galley all day, from breakfast to an aperitif at anchor to dinner, and what reaches the table depends on what the sea and the islands give. Once you step aboard you do not open your wallet again.
A note for anyone planning further ahead: from May 2027 the boat leaves the Caribbean through the Panama Canal and moves to the Sea of Cortez in Baja California, Mexico.
