A week under sail through the San Blas archipelago, from the coral cays of the outer reef to the rivers that run back into the Panamanian rainforest.
The San Blas archipelago, Guna Yala to the people who live there, stretches for over a hundred miles along the Caribbean coast of Panama and holds more than three hundred islands. The Guna govern the territory themselves, and their rules have kept the reefs and the fishing largely intact. A week is the length that lets you cross the archipelago rather than sample it, moving from the western cays near the mainland landing all the way out to the exposed eastern reefs.
Navigation is easy and continuous. The trade wind holds from the east almost every day, the water inside the barrier is flat, and the legs between anchorages are short, rarely more than a dozen miles. Over seven days the boat covers ground that a shorter trip cannot: the outer chains, the quieter groups that most visitors never reach, and the mainland coast where the rainforest comes down to the water.
The landscape changes as you go. The western cays are single palms on white sand, the outer chain is reef and open horizon, and behind the islands the mainland rises in green ridges cut by rivers. Underwater the reefs carry soft and hard coral, nurse sharks, eagle rays, angelfish, barracuda and lobsters in numbers that are hard to believe until you see them. Up the rivers, with the outboard off, herons stand in the shallows and kingfishers cut across the channel while monkeys move in the canopy.
The Guna villages sit on their own islands, dense with cane and palm houses, and one of the days is given to them. Molas, the layered textiles the women stitch by hand, are made and sold here, and on the mainland a short walk goes through mango, avocado and banana trees. Landing fees are already settled for you, so nothing is negotiated and nothing is paid.
On board, seven days settle into a rhythm. The boat is sailed by the couple who live aboard year round with their young daughter, born and raised at sea and part of the crew. Meals come out of the galley all day and follow what the sea and the islands give, fish caught along the way, lobster from the reefs, fruit from the villages. Nothing is charged on board for the whole week.
This is a sample itinerary, not a fixed package. The rate is calculated per person and per night, so the trip can also be shortened, one day at a time, down to a minimum of four nights, which is the shortest stay that still reaches the outer cays. Cabins are sold individually and departure is guaranteed even for a single guest, or the whole boat can be taken exclusively for up to four people. A note for anyone planning further ahead: from May 2027 the boat leaves the Caribbean through the Panama Canal and moves to the Sea of Cortez in Baja California, Mexico.
