Stromboli Fire Flotilla

A flotilla cruise to celebrate the magic of the Fire Arts in Stromboli, the Island with a heart of fire!

The Festa del Fuoco di Stromboli (The Fire Festival of Stromboli) is a celebration of the element of fire and the many ways we creatively interact with it as human beings. The manipulation of fire is surely one of humanity’s outstanding qualities, as well as one of the earliest abilities to distinguish us from our animal companions.

Stromboli, one of the seven Aeolian Islands, with its heart of fire and its active crater, erupting liquid lava several times every hour of every day, is the predestined place to host an event that has at its core the exhibition, exploration and exchange of the Fire Arts. Throughout this specialized cruise we will visit many of the volcanic Aeolian Islands including Stromboli.

The Aeolian Islands are the seven sisters born from lava and fire in the legendary Tyrrhenian Sea. Volcanic eruptions, water, wind and sun created them and forged the individual character of each, reflected also by old customs and traditions of its inhabitants.

This tour discovers the striking beauty of the archipelago through a series of easy to moderate hikes and boat excursions. Unspoiled nature, turquoise seawater, charming villages, remains of ancient civilizations, exciting geology, and last, but not least, volcanic activity await you. Delicious food and wonderful beaches round out this tour to complete an unforgettable experience.

Itinerary

Day 1
Tropea - Stromboli
It has a typical volcano shape, and the spectacle it offers is unique. At night, sailing in front of Stromboli, you can see the so-called "Sciara di fuoco" characterized by the free fall of fire lapillus in the sea; this "fire show" is simply breathtaking. A sight worth seeing! The small volcanic island’s dark nights, unspoiled by street lamps and light pollution, has become a canvas to a cast of international artists who gather each year at the end of summer to create and exhibit sculptures and performances using fire and physical expression as their medium.
Day 2
Stromboli - Salina
This Island with its steep rugged coastline is the most unspoilt of the Islands. It is formed by two extinct volcanoes: Monte Fossa delle Felci and "Monte dei Porri" which give it an aspect for which the ancient name of Island was derived: "Dydime" or rather twins. Salina is named after the salt-works to the South-east, beyond cape "Lingua". The island is formed of numerous small natural bays, among which, Pollara, with its beaches and deserted fishermen's cottages, very picturesque at sunset; Rinella with its black-coloured grottos , which has been transformed into a small port. The very first tourist port of the Aeolian Islands was realized at Santa Marina Salina.
Day 3
Salina - Lipari
The main island, certainly the richest in history, inhabited since the Palaeolithic Age. The most striking feature of the ancient remains is certainly the castle, dating back to the VI century and situated on the ancient acropolis. Today, the castle houses the "Aeolian Archeological Museum" which relates the History of the Islands from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages. Characteristic of the Island are: the pumice-stone quarries of Porticello, which render the beach and surrounding waters a peculiar white colour; the Faraglioni to the south off Vulcano; the lively square of Marina Corta; Sottomonastero, or Marina Lunga, a landing place with a quay reserved for boats in transit.
Day 4
Lipari - Vulcano
The island of thermal springs and mud-bathing, a destination of sport enthusiasts who can appreciate and enjoy the beauty of its waters together with that of the volcano, from which there are breathtaking sights, for example, the view of the surrounding islands and the isthmus connecting Vulcano to Vulcanello. The island offers a variety of sceneries but access to the most beautiful spots are to be reached by sea: La Grotta del Cavallo, the pool of Venere, the beaches to the South and the numerous caves to the West.
Day 5
Vulcano - Panarea
Limpid waters, craggy cliffs and fascinating seabeds make Panarea a much sought after place for sub aquatic sports. Young and lively tourists are attracted not only by the beauty of Panarea but by the vivacious nightlife. By day one can visit the Bronze Age village located on the promontory of Capo Milazzese where the cliffs form a splendid calanque: Cala Junco, which is one of the most beautiful places of all the Islands.
Day 6
Panarea - Stromboli
Enjoy swimming in the satellites rocks and tiny islands around Panarea; Basiluzzo, Lisca Bianca, and Dattilo. Her you have plenty choice between snorkeling in the sulfuric bubbles coming up from the bottom of the sea or exploring hidden grottos. In Lisca bianca nobody knows that the Kaolin is the most gentle and virtues clay to the skin, naturally from the rocks of Lisca Bianca. Sailing back to Stromboli in the evening to admire the unique night lava eruption on the north side of the island. Back to the village to meet again the artists for another fire festival day.
Day 7
Stromboli - Tropea
Breakfast with lemon granita and fresh brioshe in the main square of the village to have the last panoramic view of Stromboli and Strombilicchio rock. Sailing around the island to visit Ginostra; the smallest village of the entire Sicilian islands, some more daily show is hopefully waiting for you. After lunch is time to sail back to Capo Vaticano for a last swim after this crossing sailing back to Tropea. Overnight in Tropea marina. Disembarking the morning after.

PRESS RELEASE The next edition of the Festa del Fuoco, with “Luna Park” as it’s theme, will take place, of course on Stromboli, Europe’s most constantly active volcano, from the 30th of August to the 13th of September 2014 ! As has become tradition the participation and collaboration of established and emerging performers and artists from all over the globe will guarantee the success and innovation of the upcoming edition. We are now open and looking forward to receiving proposals by groups and individuals eager to be among the chosen artists of this edition. Those interested are invited to read the “Participation” page of the Festa del Fuoco website, to know how best to prepare their application and increase their chances. The workshops held by the hosted artists will give enthusiasts of all levels of experience a chance to exchange and hone their skills and broaden their understanding of the disciplines involved. Most of the activities will be centred around our new home, the “Parcoparco” a natural, open space on the flanks of the volcano, complete with stage and permanent art installations.
