The Saronic Gulf is a scenic area, characterized by old towns with strong cultural heritage, fishing villages, picturesque coves, bright blue waters and mild winds throughout the year. However, a more detailed examination will also reveal cosmopolitan places, historic harbours, deserted beaches and uninhabited islands.
Well known towns like Aegina, Epidaurus, Methana, Poros, Hydra, Spetses and Porto Heli serve as destinations, but lesser-known places like Agistri, Korfos, Vathi, Ermioni, Perdika and even uninhabited places like Kyra, Dokos, Gali and Zogeria can keep the crew safe at night.
This back-up plan has been designed, assuming strong northerly winds above Force 5, mainly in the Cyclades, but also affecting the Saronic gulf at a certain degree. Strong southerly winds in the Cyclades, may require, a rework of the plan and a different selection of destinations.
The yacht will be located at Pier 2 in Olympic marine. The crew will welcome you aboard at 14.00h with refreshments, show you to your cabin and provide you with all the necessary information relative to your safety and comfort. we will depart at 15.00h for the cove of Cape Sounion, under the emblematic Temple of Poseidon, to spend the night in this relatively protected environment from the strong northerly winds and gain an early start on the next day for the long trip ahead. You can take your first dip in the Aegean Sea, if you wish and afterwards the crew will serve you dinner. If the weather allows for a possibility to perform a relatively calm crossing, by travelling during the night, the skipper will inform you, will grab the opportunity and thus gain for you an extra day (and a possible extra destination to visit) .
Soon after sunrise the crew will prepare the yacht for the crossing and depart as early as possible. You can stay in bed for as long as you wish. Your hostess will make your breakfast available during the crossing, when you get up. A few hours later, Tselevinia islands will provide you with an exotic environment to have a swim, relax and get into holiday mood. Lunch will be served on board and soon after, the cruise will continue for
its ultimate destination, the port of Ermioni. Ermioni provides very good shelter from the strong northerly winds and its open plan can accommodate a good number of visiting yachts. It also acts as a “remote” harbor for nearby Hydra, since it is almost impossible to find mooring space in Hydra (which must be visited) harbour. You will have your afternoon free, to visit Ermioni and have dinner at your leisure.
Day3
Monday: Ermioni (visit to Hydra)
Soon after a good breakfast on board, you can catch one of the small ferry boats or share a watertaxi for a visit to Hydra. On this day, lunch and dinner will be at your leisure, so that you can make the most of the day in Hydra. The cosmopolitan island attracts the Athenian elite with their yachts during the weekends. A long list of famous people, both Greek and foreign, have made Hydra their home at various periods. It also
boasts a solid historical background, mainly due to its participation in the fights against the Ottoman Empire for the liberation of Greece. It is famous for its ban of any vehicle with wheels (except two
garbage trucks), so all transportation is done by donkeys or horses. However, you can find expensive boutiques for shopping, art galleries, gourmet restaurants, etc. Trekking or going on horse-back to its
mountain top to enjoy the views of the Aegean, is a very popular activity with visitors. Visiting historical and art museums offers another opportunity for cultural activity. Do not miss the last ferry to return to our catamaran.
Day4
Tuesday: Ermioni – Poros (about 22 nautical miles)
After breakfast, you will depart for Poros. Poros is an island famous for its nearby beaches, most of them located in a big protected bay and very close to the town. It has a very picturesque town architecture. Other points of interest include the old Russian Navy base, the famous lemon tree forest and an open-air cinema that continues to operate, in the summer months. It enjoys significant yachting activity, due to its ample protected space and its re-supply (water, diesel) facilities. Soon after arrival, lunch will be served and you will have the rest of the day free for discovering the town, relaxing, swimming and enjoying dinner at your leisure in one of the many fine taverns.
Day5
Wednesday: Poros – Agistri (Aponissos) (about 15 nautical miles)
Breakfast will be served and then, the yacht will depart for a beautiful open-air location at the west side of Agistri island. Swimming and relaxing onboard will be the order of the day. Lunch will be served at noon. Afterwards, you can visit the shore (by dinghy) for a walk or have dinner at your leisure at the only tavern available, later in the evening.
Soon after breakfast, the cruise will continue for the town of Aegina. Lunch will be served on board, while dinner will be at your leisure. You will have plenty of time to visit the town, relax on board and generally come and go, as you please. Aegina had been a powerful city in the ancient world and has a rich history. Its last glorious period was 200 years ago when it became the first capital of liberated Greece for a short period. The temple of Aphaea (Athena) has been standing in a good condition for thousands of years and along with the temple of Parthenon at the Acropolis of Athens and the temple of Poseidon in Sounion form a holy isosceles triangle with the Poseidon temple being at the apex with equal distance from the other two temples dedicated both to goddess Athena. The town has interesting neoclassical buildings and monuments, a busy harbour and many good taverns. A big Christian Orthodox monastery dedicated to the recent Saint Nectarios of Aegina, attracts thousands of people every year. Finally, the island is famous for its pistachio production and
many Greek sailors make a point to buy good supplies in the fall, with the new harvest, every year.
After breakfast, the long return trip to Olympic Marine, will start. It will take us over the north side of Aegina to gain a good angle against the prevailing winds and also have the yacht protected by the shores of Attica, from the wind and the waves. Lunch will be served during the crossing. A stop at Sounion, for swimming and light snacks, will provide everyone with a chance for retrospect and consolidation of the experiences of a great week, before they become cherished memories for the years to come. Upon return to Olympic Marine, the evening period and dinner will be at your leisure.
Day 8 – Saturday morning: Olympic Marine Lavrion
Your crew will serve you breakfast and greet you before 9.00h, which is the scheduled disembarkation time.
