Welcome to the #2 PART of our Guide to Private Boat Rental, where we delve into the world of private boat charters and the additional expenses that should be taken into consideration before making any reservations.
Additional cost: obligatory extra, services on request and holiday expenses
A charter rental holiday can be unexpectedly affordable if you can keep the overall holiday costs under control by picking the right accessories and extras, especially since you will already have taken care of the most important voices of any holiday budget: where to sleep, where to eat and how to move from one location to another. The boat is in fact fully equipped with a kitchen, beds and the power of the engine or sails to move you at any time to your own private view of all the best sunset and panoramas.
Most charter rentals have a base price for the booking of the boat and additional costs that are generally identified as extras and are divided into obligatory extras and on request services, that are to be settled either on check-in day or in advance, but are not included in the payment for the rental of the boat itself.
Obligatory extra
The list of obligatory extras indicates a number of services that are not optional such as the cleaning of the boat (or transit log), permits for natural reserves, APA if pertinent to the type of holiday (i.e. Advanced provisioning allowance).
Extras on request
In addition, you must take into account some of the services that you might like to be added to the charter rental like: linens and towels, outboard engine for your dinghy, extra cushions for the deck, wifi connection, barbecue equipment, water toys, fishing or snorkeling gear, on board provisioning services and more, like for example the costs of the hired crew.
When planning a sailing holiday, it's important to consider extra insurance options to protect your trip. These can include insurance for the security deposit, travel and health insurance, and damages caused by the skipper and passengers on board. Taking the time to understand and purchase these insurance options can provide peace of mind and protect you from unexpected expenses and damages during your sailing adventure.
Holiday expenses
Finally you will also need to take in consideration the costs of mooring, fuel and food during the holiday, since these are not included in the rental price and can influence the overall costs of the holiday if you do not budget correctly.
Marina fees (also called harbor or mooring fees)
It is always advisable to read all the terms and conditions of the charter party you are going to sign, to avoid surprises. Intersailclub has a policy of maximum transparency and makes a point of highlighting in all its offers, what is included and what is not included in the charter fee.
In particular, when renting a private boat you might wish to know in advance if the first and last night at the boat home’s harbor are included or not in the charter price. As these can be hidden costs that might affect the overall cost of the holiday. A certainty we can give is that all other nights are never included and the payment. The request for the berth must be made directly by the yacht’s captain to the relevant marina staff during the charter tour.
Food and beverage costs
Expenses for food and beverages are strictly tied to personal expectation and habits.
The price indicated, is estimated on the need of a single person taking in consideration that while on vacation travelers will also enjoy local restaurants or quick lunches. Clearly this estimation needs to be adapted if the person is used to higher levels of food expenses and selection, and will become higher still if high price wines, liquor and alcoholic beverages in general will be factored in the provisioning list.
Gulets and sometimes catamaran or motor yachts offer half board or full board catering service, which vary in price range and in these cases usually it is not allowed to bring onboard any beverage, but a selection will be available in the boat bar with a price list in the on board menu.
See below what overall cost for the various types of charter rental holiday can entail for the costs of consumables: food, fuel and marinas fees.
