Let’s analyze together different types of boats available for private charter rental
SAILBOAT
A sailboat is the quintessential way to enjoy the wind with a vast range of choices: from very affordable to luxury models, just the best to enjoy a true sailing experience. Traditionally it will be a monohull, with sails and engine propulsion. Charter oriented sailboats go from 30 ft (9 mt.) to a maximum of 56 ft (18 mt.) Bigger models, up to 80 ft and bigger are available, but are more common in the luxury charter sector.
These standard charter sailboats have usually the following capacity:
Small size (range 30ft to 39ft): 4/6 persons - 2 /3 double cabins - 1 /2 bathrooms
Medium size (range 40ft to 53ft): 6/14 persons - 4 double cabins + 1/2 bunks bed - 3/4 bathrooms.
Large size (range 53ft to 80ft): 6/12 persons - 4 double cabins + 1/2 bunks bed - 3/4 bathrooms.
Cabins, heads, galley and an internal saloon with seatings and table will be below deck. While outside there will be an area in the back, called the cockpit, with a table, seatings, navigation instruments and commands, covered by bimini top or hawning (sun cover). Moving toward the bow, there will be deck space, sometimes fitted with cushions, to sunbathe and relax. Since sailboats are monohulls, with a beam of maximum 5 meters, space on board is generally reduced when looking at similar size catamarans, but costs for harbor fees and fuel will be less.
CATAMARAN
Are you looking for wide spaces and comfort? A catamaran is the perfect boat for your private charter rental: three decks to enjoy your time on board in full and all the comforts you might wish for, like: air conditioning, generator, water maker and all the water toys you want to enjoy.
These standard charter catamarans have usually the following capacity:
Small size (range 38 ft to 40 ft): 6/8 persons - 3 /4 double cabins - 2/4 bathrooms
Medium size (range 41 ft to 46 ft): 6/12 persons - 3/4 double cabins + 1 bunk bed cabin - 3/4 bathrooms
Large size (range 47 ft to 80ft): 6/12 persons - 3/6 double cabins - 3/6 bathrooms.
A catamaran offers stability, the comfort of large spaces and liveability on board. In fact a catamaran, contrary to a sailboat, offers much space all around in the same size category. You will always find the cabins below deck, a big saloon both internal and external, a bow area, with or without a net, and on the bigger models also a flybridge with sunning spaces easily available, with cushions and shaded or sunny areas.
Note: Based on the maximum capacity of the sailing license, catamarans and sailboats have a foldable saloon table that becomes a bed and accommodate 1 or 2 people, these places in the saloon can be used by guests or if the hired crew consents, can be destined to either the skipper or the hostess. For boats that do not have an extra cabin for the crew, this will be an issue to keep in mind, as cabin space on board is limited. In regards to crew on board the use of at least one of the bathrooms on board is to be granted to them (shared or exclusive as preferred), since they will have no extra bathroom for their private use. This will stay true also for boats with cabins for crew, as a wc may be present in one of those cabins, but not necessarily a shower or basin.
GULET
Gulets offer you the style of a wooden boat with crew taking care of every need. These boats are ideal for large groups both for the number of cabins and the easy mobility on board. These standard charter gulets have usually the following capacity:
Small size (range 50 ft to 60 ft): 6/8 persons - 3 /4 double cabins - 3/4 bathrooms
Medium size (range 61 ft to 80 ft): 10/14 persons - 5/7 double cabins (or triples) 5/6 bathrooms.
Large size (range 80 ft to 120 ft): 12/35 persons - 6/12 double cabins - 6/12 bathrooms.
Private gulet charters entail hiring boat and crew, as this model of boats are never rented without the dedicated crew on board, even if the client is in possession of a nautical license. Cabins and heads will be below deck, while galley and an internal saloon, with seatings and table will be on the deck level. Outside there will be an area in the back, called the cockpit, with a table, seatings, navigation instruments and commands, covered by a hard top. Moving toward the bow, there will be deck space, fitted with cushions, to sunbathe and relax and covered by a removable sun hawning. Gulet offers a very comfortable access to the sea as their bath ladder is very stable, with large steps fixed to the boat side, going in the water.
MOTORYACHT
Fast and luxurious, with a motor yacht you can reach every island in the shortest time. Comfort, extravagance on board are a guarantee and on the medium to large size model a crew dedicated to pampering you will be part of the rental. The budget must be right, but if you wish for luxury this is the choice. These standard charter motorboats have usually the following capacity:
Small size (range 35 ft to 40 ft): 4/6 persons - 3/4 double cabins - 2/4 bathrooms
Medium size (range 41 ft to 46 ft): 6/8 persons - 3/4 double cabins - 3/4 bathrooms.
Large size (range 47 ft to 80ft): 6/12 persons - 3/6 double cabins - 3/6 bathrooms.
Motorboats charters entail hiring boat and crew for the most part, though the smaller boats are rented also without. The internal layout varies depending on the model and number of decks. With cabins and heads below the first deck or on the first deck in multiple level motor boats and the galley being in a specific area of the boat, dedicated to the crew. Outside there will be an area in the back with a table, seatings, navigation instruments and command plancha. Moving toward the bow, there will be deck space, fitted with cushions, to sunbathe and relax. Motorboats with a flybridge will have the command plancha on top, for better view during navigation and more seatings and sunning cushions.
What is the best period to charter a boat?
Choosing the right period to enjoy your boat holiday at the best price is a matter of period vs destination. Low and medium seasons are generally to be preferred in terms of price for value, but also in terms of local ‘traffic’. Taking in consideration that vacation days at disposal for some people might be limited to the high season period, our recommendation is to book as soon as possible and not wait till last minute so as to have the best pick of the boats.
For how long a period can I rent a boat?
In the general boat charter industry there is no real minimum or maximum time, it remains for the most part a matter of budget and time availability. Still there are some standardizations that do come into play when renting a boat.
For example in the mediterranean area it is most common to rent a boat on a weekly basis, from saturday to saturday, with a return to the home port expected in the afternoon before the disembarkation day for a technical check out of the boat. A standard that does get reinforced in the high season period.
In low season and when making an inquiry near the departure date, it is possible to rent also for shorter periods, like for a day excursion or for a week-end trip with special prices applied.
Of course there are boats that are more readily available for shorter periods of time, like rubber boats or motor boats and others like sailboats, catamarans and gulets that have standard departure days and are rented on the 7 days basis, and can be requested also for longer periods, but always in increases on the basis of 7.
Still every navigation area around the world does follow its own rules and so it is always better to inquire about standard rental periods for the destination of interest and factor this when planning your private charter rental.
Charter with a license or charter with a crew?
Having a license is not always a must! For example, it is not necessary up to a certain length and engine power for rubber or small motor boats and even sailing boats. For sailing boats and medium to large catamarans, or motoryachts a nautical license is required to be allowed to be captain of your vessel, while generally gulets and large motor yachts are rented exclusively with the owner crew on board.
In general though, lacking a license is not an obstacle to a yacht charter holiday as it is always possible to hire a captain, who will navigate in your stead. Just like it is possible to require extra crew members like a hostess or a cook to take care of all your needs during your well deserved holiday.
The costs for these services vary due to many factors, just like it happens for the yacht models themselves. Generally hiring a professional captain for a week will cost from 1.100€ to 1.600€ (depending on the size of the boat to the period) and hiring a hostess/cook will cost from 900€ to 1.300€, or slightly higher if you request more specialized and varied services.
