Yacht - Topsail Schooner
A sailing legend
More than 100 years ago, a sailing legend was born: in 1911, the Lühring shipyard at Brake/Germany built a topsail schooner.
The ship has been given a new lease of life in 1973 when it was bought by Anthony "Tiger" Timbs, an Englishman from the greater London area. A group of enthusiastic ship lovers began to rig the vessel as a brigantine. The restoration at the shipyard in Faversham / England took nearly four years. The former cargo holds were transformed into a lounge and accommodation for crew and passengers.
This Topsail Schooner with two-master was finally ready to embark on new adventures at sea. She sailed around the globe on her first journey, stopping in Australia, the Pacific and the infamous Cape Horn. The trip was barely finished in 1978 when the next challenge was already waiting for this impressive tall ship: Under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Charles, the Topsail Schooner had the honour of being the flagship for "Operation 'Drake." More than 400 crew members took part in this almost two-year globe-trotting expedition in the footsteps of the famous explorer and scientist Sir Francis Drake.
In 2011, the brigantine celebrated her 100-year anniversary! On 30 April, the Topsail Schooner was the flagship in a tall ship parade for the opening of the Bremerhaven Kaiserschleuse-lock, which set a new world record for the longest sailing boat parade.
The Topsail Schooner is very seaworthy and fit even for the high seas and should thus not be left sitting in the harbour. Therefore, FORUM train & sail offers interested sailors - even without prior sailing knowledge - new, attractive destinations. Whether it is a Caribbean cruise or summer sailing in Scandinavia - the crew of the Topsail Schooner will be happy to take you to new adventures!

Training & Topics
If you want to accomplish a sailing maneuver successfully, you must set the goal, discuss the necessary maneuvers with your crew, distribute the roles and define responsibilities. Under the guidance of experienced coaches and with the support of the captain and crew, in our trainings you will gather valuable experience that you can immediately apply in your daily professional life. You will learn what characteristics and behaviours will help you and which will prevent you from achieving your goals. The 'Eye of the Wind' is your attractive meeting room that lets you explore the country and people, and where the training and learning is much more fun. The reality of a ship and the maneuvers to be performed are far away from the usual laboratory conditions of conventional management trainings.
Teambuilding: we all pull together as a team
How is a group transformed into a successful team? - There is no better venue than aboard of a ship where team spirit and responsibility can be trained efficiently. We can only achieve our objectives if we work together and support each other. In various roles, the participants gain a real-life experience on how common goals, clear division of responsibilities, effective planning and communication affect the team. In the evening over a delicious dinner, there will be an opportunity for feedback sessions and informal exchanges of experiences between trainers and participants. The successful outcome of complex tasks and long-term projects is dependent on the effectiveness of teams. Not only expert knowledge of team members but making use of the whole spectrum of knowledge within the group as well as abilities and skills of the team members is pivotal. In this context, the question will be answered which factors have a positive impact on the success of a team. People refine their skills through the influence of different interconnected factors by which specific characteristics and personality profiles as well as behavioral roles within teams emerge. Every person has specific strengths. Those preferences will be determined four weeks before the training via an online based process licensed by Dr. M. Belbin, a British expert on the field of team- and leadership development. Here every participant will fill out a questionnaire for self-evaluating purposes which will be supplemented by an outside observer in order to determine a profile about behavioral roles of each participant within teams. The results will be analyzed on board and teams will be formed accordingly. Focal points: Effective communication, improved understanding for the needs of others, reduction of conflict potential, optimal teamwork, orientation and identity, team analysis, effective team building and situation specific occupancy of team roles, motivation, strength analysis, development of goals. Target groups: All those wishing to improve or enhance their team skills. Team leaders and managers. Working groups of a company with at least 4 members. Participants: 6 to 12 participants + Crew + Trainer Duration: 3 to 4 days Dates and rates: Please contact us
Leadership Training: From successful ship command to successful leadership
“Learning by doing” reaches a new dimension. Most leadership trainings are mainly theory-based and take place in seminar rooms that offer little space for creativity. The management games intending to loosen up the situation or deepen the theory, although carried out with lots of effort to create a close-to-reality atmosphere, usually seem artificial. The leadership trainings aboard the Eye of the Wind are completely different: the sailing vessel does not act as a floating seminar room but rather is integrated into the training process! Many nautical terms have found their way into our everyday speech: Meaning we’re all in the same boat, all hands on deck, stay on the right course or as we call industrial leaders also captains of industry. Leading an enterprise and steering a ship actually have many things in common: a captain is responsible for ship, crew and passengers. He or she needs to define and communicate goals, plan milestones and coordinate resources, financial means, dates and many more. Furthermore tasks are to be delegated and controlled in order to be able to take correctional measures as soon as possible. The arrival is dependent on wind and weather conditions as well as the crew’s and the passengers' health. A ship is like a small enterprise with a boss, who without his team would not be able to reach any goals. The parallels that exist between the ship and an enterprise will be demonstrated in practice which is an enrichment for the training. The ship itself is the essential tool for the training. In different roles the participants can experience how and where their leadership competencies can be further improved. After a phase of getting to know one another and receiving an introduction to the ship, they will, together with an experienced trainer, take over the lead on board. The crew will of course always be around to assist and answer questions. A concrete goal is given, decisions have to be made, the crew needs to be assigned to tasks and maneuvers need to be planned. Every decision will have an immediate impact on the ship and crew. Feedback will be given after each maneuver and completed by theoretical know-how, advise on how to improve leadership behavior and optimization potential will be pointed out. The experiences made on board will lead to awareness that can directly be transferred to business life. In the evenings accompanied by high class catering the opportunity for informational exchange with trainer and other participants will be given. Additionally, fun and adventure in a sea-breeze will be offered – learning with all senses! Focal points: Team Leadership,Setting goals and communicating, planning, strategies for goal achievement, team-building skills and effective communication. Target groups: Entrepreneurs, executives and managers Participants: 6 to 12 participants + Crew + Trainer Duration: 3 to 4 days Dates and rates: Please contact us
Communication - only clear messages lead to success
The more we communicate with each other every day, the more inevitable are many misunderstandings. Especially when dealing with employees and customers, it is essential to adopt a communication style that is clear, smooth and conflict-free. Aboard the Eye of the Wind you will not only learn the fundamentals of communication, but also how to communicate without too many words or being loud and how to delegate tasks. Small recourse into theory immediately after each manoeuvre provides information about the experiences and room for improvement. Focal points: Setting goals and communicating, planning, strategies for goal achievement, team-building skills and communication. Target groups: Entrepreneurs, executives, managers, account managers Participants: 6 to 12 participants + Crew + Trainer Duration: 3 to 4 days Dates and rates: Please contact us
