A week of sailing along the wild coast of north western Sicily, from the cliffs of the Zingaro reserve to the clear waters around the Egadi Islands.
The north western corner of Sicily, between Castellammare del Golfo and the Egadi Islands, is one of the most varied stretches of coast on the island, combining protected nature reserves, wide sandy bays and a small archipelago set in some of the clearest water in the central Mediterranean.
The week alternates longer sailing days with slower ones spent at anchor. Distances along the mainland coast are short, rarely more than a couple of hours between stops, while the crossing out to the Egadi Islands is the longest passage of the cruise and gives a proper taste of open water sailing before the pace slows again among the islands.
Anchorages range from the dramatic limestone cliffs of the Zingaro nature reserve to the flat, quarried landscape of Favignana, by way of the long beach at San Vito Lo Capo. Coves are generally sheltered and well suited to swimming, with water that shifts from deep blue offshore to pale turquoise close to the rocks.
Ashore, small fishing towns and harbours give a sense of everyday Sicilian life away from the more crowded parts of the island, from the waterfront of Castellammare del Golfo itself to the narrow streets of Favignana and the tiny village on Levanzo, with fresh seafood a constant presence on local menus.
Life on board follows the rhythm of the wind and the coast, with mornings often starting with a swim before breakfast and afternoons left free for snorkelling, reading on deck or a walk ashore, before gathering again for dinner as the sun goes down over the water.
Itinerary
Day1
Embarkation in Castellammare del Golfo
Board in the early afternoon at the marina of Castellammare del Golfo and take some time to settle in before the crew briefing. Once everyone is comfortable on board, there is usually a short sail within the gulf to get a first feel for the boat, followed by a relaxed evening either in the marina or at anchor close by, with dinner ashore in the old town or on board.
Day2
Zingaro coast and Scopello
Heading west, the coastline soon rises into the cliffs of the Zingaro nature reserve, one of the wildest stretches of shoreline in Sicily. Several small coves along this protected coast make for excellent swimming and snorkelling stops, with clear water and rocky backdrops. The day continues towards Scopello, known for its old tuna fishery and the rock stacks just offshore, where the boat usually spends the night at anchor or on a nearby mooring.
Day3
San Vito Lo Capo
The route continues around the headland towards San Vito Lo Capo, whose long sandy beach and turquoise water are among the best known on this coast. There is time to swim, walk along the promenade or simply relax on deck, with the limestone bulk of Monte Monaco as a backdrop. The night is spent at anchor near the cape or in the small local harbour, depending on conditions.
Day4
Crossing to Favignana
This is the longest sailing day of the week, as the boat leaves the mainland coast behind and heads out towards the Egadi Islands. Favignana, the largest of the group, comes into view after a few hours at sea, its flat profile and old stone quarries giving it a very different character from the coast left behind. The evening is spent in or near the harbour of Favignana, with the town small streets and waterfront restaurants close at hand.
Day5
Favignana and Levanzo
A full day is dedicated to exploring the Egadi Islands at a slower pace. The coves around Favignana, many only reachable by boat, offer some of the clearest water of the whole cruise and are ideal for swimming and snorkelling. A short crossing can bring the boat to Levanzo, the smallest and quietest of the islands, where a handful of coves and a tiny village complete a relaxed day mostly spent in and around the water.
Day6
Return towards the Sicilian coast
The return crossing begins in the morning, bringing the mainland coast gradually back into view. Depending on timing and weather, there is often a stop near San Vito Lo Capo or along the Golfo del Cofano for a last swim before continuing east. The night is spent at anchor or in a sheltered bay within reach of Castellammare del Golfo, ready for the final leg back to the marina.
Day7
Return to Castellammare del Golfo and disembarkation
The last morning is for a final sail back into the Golfo di Castellammare, arriving at the marina in the course of the day. The final night is spent on board in port, and after breakfast the next morning the boat is prepared for the next crew, marking the end of the cruise.
