Your sailing trip
Sail from Sorong through the Dampier Strait and the Fam Islands to remote Wayag, snorkelling over some of the richest coral reefs on Earth and anchoring each night among the islands of Raja Ampat.
Raja Ampat lies off the western tip of New Guinea, in the Indonesian province of Southwest Papua, where hundreds of jungle-covered limestone islands rise from warm, clear water. It sits at the heart of the Coral Triangle and is regarded as one of the most biodiverse marine regions in the world, with reefs that start just a few metres below the surface.
This cruise starts and ends in Sorong and follows a loop of twelve days. The first part is spent in the Dampier Strait, with short hops between Kri, Mansuar and Arborek. The route then continues west to the Fam Islands and north to Kawe, on the Equator, and Wayag, the most remote part of the archipelago, before turning south again. Passages are unhurried and most days combine a few hours under way with long stops at anchor.
The scenery changes constantly: reef-fringed islands and jetties in the Dampier Strait, the karst pinnacles and turquoise lagoons of Piaynemo, quiet bays in the Fam Islands and the maze of limestone islets at Wayag. Nights are spent at anchor in sheltered bays, far from the main settlements, and each morning opens on a different view.
Time ashore is part of the trip whenever conditions allow. A walk through the small village of Arborek, the climbs to the viewpoints of Piaynemo and Wayag and encounters with island communities add a glimpse of local life and culture to the days spent in the water.
Life on board is informal and shared. The group is small, with a maximum of six guests, and the crew live aboard all year round, so guests join a real voyage rather than a standard charter. The crew take care of sailing, provisioning and cooking lunch and dinner, and guests are asked for a small hand with everyday tasks such as setting the table and washing up. The programme stays flexible, leaving room to linger in a place that deserves it or to change course when the weather suggests it.

Reef and Manta Snorkelling in the Dampier Strait (On Demand)
The Dampier Strait is known for its dense fish life and healthy coral. Snorkelling stops around Cape Kri, Yenbuba and Arborek offer the chance to drift over reef slopes and, with some luck, to meet turtles and manta rays. Sites are chosen day by day according to current, visibility and sea conditions.
Piaynemo and Wayag Viewpoint Hikes (On Demand)
Two short but steep climbs lead to the best-known panoramas of Raja Ampat: the stairway of Piaynemo and the rocky trail above the lagoons of Wayag. Sturdy shoes, water and an early start are recommended, and the Wayag trek depends on weather and on the access rules in force at the time.
Arborek Village Visit (On Demand)
Arborek is a small island community in the Dampier Strait. A walk through the village, along sandy paths and past the church and the school, is an easy way to see everyday island life before getting back in the water around the jetty.
Travel organizer tips
Pack smart for your yacht charter: choose a soft bag instead of a hard suitcase, bring lightweight layers, reef-safe sunscreen, and non-slip shoes for onboard use. A couple of swimsuits and motion sickness remedies can also make a big difference. Each boat has limited storage, so pack light, but wisely! Need help building the perfect list? Start your day with a swim in a quiet bay, sail to hidden beaches or seaside villages, and enjoy a slow lunch on deck. Afternoons mean snorkeling, sunbathing, or exploring ashore. As the sun sets, your boat anchors in a scenic cove or near a harbor, ready for a relaxed dinner and a night under the stars. Curious about the full experience? Discover more in our guide: What’s a typical day like on a sailing holiday?
On skipper-only charters, guests usually share cooking and cleaning duti, think salads, pasta, and good teamwork. If there's a hostess, light meals and tidying are included, but it's still a casual, collaborative vibe. On fully crewed yachts, you’ll enjoy full service with a chef and crew managing everything. Want to know what’s included in your setup? Read the full guide: Who takes care of cooking and cleaning on a sailing charter?
Summer sailing holidays rarely face major weather issues, but when the sea gets rough, skippers adjust the route for your safety. Expect protected bays, marina stops, or a change in plan. These moments often lead to unexpected gems: local towns to explore, time to relax on board, or cozy dinners ashore. Curious about how crews handle these changes?
