Skiathos has the golden sandy beaches (if you can find an empty lounger or space to spread a towel). Skopelos lacks the beaches, but hopes the "Mama Mia! effect" will bring it extra business. But it's the third sister-island, Alonissos, that is most appealing, with an unpretentious harbour village, a dinky hill village replete with chic art shops and good restaurants, uncrowded pebbly coves and pleasant walks on wooded hills.
Koukounaries, near the south-west corner of Skiathos, is the best stretch of golden sand on an island that isn't short of perfect beaches. Alonissos has lots of pebbly coves and a long, uncrowded stretch at Agios Dimitrios, midway up the west coast.
