This wonderful voyage offers a chance to enjoy two very different South Pacific countries in one trip: Samoa and Tonga. The journey begins in Apia on the northern shores of the island of Upolu. Before we set sail, you’ll have a chance to explore this gorgeous jungle-covered island and meet the proud Samoans. Here is a list of many of the things you can choose from to fill your time:
- Hiking in the lush jungle mountains and visiting the stunning waterfalls ranging in intensity from neck massage to powerful cascade. Some have refreshing swimming holes and there is one that you can slide down.
- Listening to the stunning voices of the Tongans who love to sing, especially in Sunday morning church.
- The tattoo culture is rich with traditional artistry and techniques, where the patterns and shapes are bold, black, symbolic, and fitted to the curves of the body. The artists still make their own stick-poke instruments. Are you brave enough?
- Excellent diving and snorkeling is available on the reefs around the island.
- The market has tasty fruit, handmade wood carvings, colorfully printed fabrics, and fresh fish to offer. Shopping island-style.
- Given the right swell, Samoa has phenomenal surf. Dragon’s Breath, Pudding Rock, or Devil’s Island, to name a few.
We’ll soon be raising sails en route to Tonga, expecting a pleasant 3 days and nights passage in Trade Winds from abeam. Depending on weather and time schedule, we may have a chance of stopping in the island of Niuatoputapu for a snorkel or dive on its beautiful reefs. Towards the end of the journey the island group of Vava’u will show on the horizon. This is what you can look forward to upon arrival to Tonga:
- Scuba, free dive, snorkel, or spearfish in the turquoise waters and beautiful reefs. There is a mysterious yet safe cave dive for any skill level on the way in to Vava’u.
- Tonga’s marine wildlife is well known for its rich diversity. You have a good chance to see dolphins, whales, rays, and turtles, just to name a few.
- Enjoy the scenic harbor of Port Refuge, Vava’u. The port is a deep cut waterway, remnant of an ancient volcano crater now open to the ocean.
- The nice little town of Neiafu is nestled in the side of the green mountains with lovely restaurants and handicraft stores to conclude your visit.
You could spend a year on the islands and still wouldn’t have seen everything. To make the most of what Samoa and Tonga have to offer, we recommend giving yourself plenty of extra time outside of the voyage. We will have a wonderful journey filled with a wealth of unforgettable experiences, but we will NOT have enough time to do everything suggested above! If your heart is set on some specific activity, be sure to tell us about it so we can do our best to create the opportunity.
We leave the itinerary details up to our guests, while taking weather into account. Once aboard, everyone will meet to discuss possibilities. We are usually very active but in a relaxed way and do not worry about a strict, regimented schedule. The resulting itinerary usually includes the best dive spots and nature sites of each area.
