The Balearic Islands occupy a stretch of western Mediterranean water between the Spanish mainland and the Sardinian coast that has attracted sailors for as long as records exist. Among the four main islands of the archipelago, Ibiza and Formentera form a natural sailing circuit of remarkable variety: two islands separated by a shallow channel of exceptional water clarity, connected by short passages that leave most of each day available for swimming, eating and exploring ashore.
Sant Antoni de Portmany on the western coast of Ibiza is one of the most practical departure points for a Balearic sailing holiday. The natural harbor is well protected, the marina infrastructure is comprehensive and the position on the western side of the island puts the best coastal scenery, including Cala Bassa, Cala Comte and the offshore rock of Es Vedrà, within easy reach of the first afternoon at sea.
Ibiza's coastline divides naturally into two experiences. The interior and the northern coast are characterized by pine-covered hills, small farming villages and a landscape that changes relatively little between the medieval period and the present. The southern and western coastlines carry the island's international reputation for clear water and dramatic natural settings, with bays carved into limestone cliffs, sandy seabeds visible through ten meters of transparent water and a quality of light in the afternoon that defines the visual memory of a Mediterranean sailing holiday.
Formentera is the smallest inhabited island in the Balearics and the one with the most precisely protected natural environment. The shallow channel between the two islands, known as Es Freus, is a marine protected area where the posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows that filter the water to its characteristic clarity are given legal protection from anchoring in the most sensitive zones. The beaches of Ses Illetes on the northern spit and Cala Saona on the western coast are among the most photographed natural landscapes in Spain, and both are best approached by sailing boat rather than by the road network that serves the rest of the island.
Ibiza Town on the southeastern coast provides the cultural anchor of the itinerary. Dalt Vila, the fortified upper city enclosed within Renaissance walls completed in 1585, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and overlooks a harbor that has been in continuous use since the Phoenician period. The contrast between the remote anchorages of the week and the concentrated history and waterfront life of Ibiza Town is one of the defining characteristics of this sailing circuit.

Day1
Sant Antoni, Boarding and First Anchorage at Cala Bassa
Boarding takes place at Sant Antoni Marina during the afternoon. After cabin allocation, provisioning and a safety briefing with the skipper covering the plan for the week, the catamaran leaves the harbor for a short first sail along the western coast of Ibiza. Cala Bassa is the destination for the first evening, a sheltered bay with a sandy bottom, pine trees descending almost to the waterline and water clear enough to see the anchor from the deck. The bay faces southwest and the light in the late afternoon is among the best on the island. Dinner onboard at anchor with the first Balearic sunset from the cockpit.
Day2
Cala Comte and Es Vedrà
After breakfast at anchor in Cala Bassa, the boat sails south along the coast toward Cala Comte, a bay formed by a series of rocky islets and platforms that break the western coastline into a sequence of clear-water channels with sandy seabeds and consistent depth. The combination of color and underwater visibility here is consistently cited as among the finest on the entire island, and the morning swim stop is unhurried. Navigation continues in the afternoon toward Es Vedrà, the uninhabited limestone island rising 382 meters from the sea off the southwest coast of Ibiza. The rock has been the subject of persistent local mythology connecting it to the Odyssey and to various navigational legends of the western Mediterranean, and the reality of sailing past it at close range in the evening light is striking enough that the stories feel less implausible than they might otherwise. Crossing to Formentera and Ses Illetes
The morning crossing from Ibiza's southern coast to Formentera covers the shallow channel of Es Freus, where the water changes color progressively as the depth decreases from the dark blue of the open passage to the pale turquoise of the lagoon approaching the northern spit of Formentera. Ses Illetes is the anchorage destination, a narrow strip of white sand extending into the channel with water on both sides and posidonia meadows below the hull that give the bay its extraordinary color. The afternoon is dedicated entirely to swimming, paddleboarding and lying on the bow nets watching the sea floor in remarkable clarity below. Overnight at anchor in the Formentera channel.

Exploring Formentera
A full day dedicated to the coastline and character of Formentera, the most naturally intact of the Balearic Islands. The boat moves between anchorages through the day, with Cala Saona on the western coast offering a sheltered bay enclosed by orange limestone cliffs that contrast directly with the turquoise water below. Cap de Barbaria on the southern tip is the most remote point of the island, with an 18th-century lighthouse on a flat plateau of low scrubland above vertical sea cliffs that see very little boat traffic. Guests who prefer time ashore can explore the island by bicycle, a common way to move between the villages and beaches on an island flat enough to make cycling practical. The pace of Formentera is distinctly unhurried compared to Ibiza, and the contrast between the two islands becomes a defining characteristic of the week. Overnight at anchor.

Formentera to Ibiza Town
The passage north from Formentera follows the eastern coast of the channel before opening into the longer crossing toward the southeastern corner of Ibiza. Swim stops in sheltered bays on the southern Ibiza coast are possible depending on timing and wind direction before the final approach to Ibiza Town. The arrival beneath the walls of Dalt Vila is the most architecturally dramatic moment of the itinerary, with the Renaissance fortifications rising directly above the harbor entrance and the old town visible in layers above the waterfront. The afternoon is free for walking up through the Dalt Vila gate into the medieval streets, visiting the cathedral at the summit with its views over the harbor, or exploring the lower town and waterfront area. Dinner ashore in the Marina Botafoc area or within the old town. Overnight in Ibiza Town marina or at anchor in the harbor.
Day6
Ibiza Town to Cala Benirràs
Navigation heads north along the eastern coast of Ibiza, a stretch of less visited coastline with small coves and forested hillsides descending to rocky platforms accessible by boat. The destination is Cala Benirràs on the northern coast, a bay enclosed by pine-covered slopes with a distinctive rounded rock formation at its center and water calm enough in settled conditions for snorkeling over the rocky seabed below the cliffs. Cala Benirràs is one of the places on Ibiza that retains an atmosphere shaped by the island's alternative community history rather than its international tourism reputation, and the beach at sunset has a long-established tradition of informal gathering that gives it a particular character among the northern bays. The last full day on the water is spent in the quietest and most natural section of Ibiza available from a sailing base at Sant Antoni. Overnight at anchor.
Day7
Return to Sant Antoni and Disembarkation
The final navigation follows the northern and western coastline of Ibiza back toward Sant Antoni, passing familiar waters from the first days of the cruise with a perspective that the week has changed. A last swimming stop in a sheltered bay along the western coast is possible depending on timing and sea conditions before the approach to the marina. Arrival is planned for the afternoon or early evening. Guests spend the final night onboard and disembarkation takes place the following morning after breakfast.

The Lagoon 51 is a VPLP-designed cruising catamaran that won the British Yachting Awards Multihull of the Year in 2022, a recognition that reflects the range of decisions made well in a single design: a forward-stepped mast that opens the saloon to 360-degree views, a modular flybridge with full standing headroom, a forward cockpit with coffee table and sun cushions, and a sustainability approach built into the materials and energy systems from the ground up.
The Lagoon 51 is a 51-foot catamaran built by the world's largest multihull manufacturer and designed by VPLP with interior styling that uses FSC-certified light oak wood and upholstery made entirely from recycled materials. The design brief centered on one organizing principle: maximizing the connection between the boat's multiple living spaces without sacrificing the privacy that makes a week at sea with a group genuinely comfortable.
The mast is stepped forward of the saloon rather than through it, an arrangement that removes the structural intrusion from the center of the interior and allows panoramic windows to wrap around the full saloon perimeter. Stepping from the aft cockpit into the saloon, the amount of space and light is immediately striking, with a raised seating area and light oak joinery giving the interior a warmth closer to a well-designed apartment than a charter boat. The galley is fully integrated with a stove, oven, dishwasher and refrigerator-freezer combination laid out along a counter that has enough workspace for real cooking at sea.
Two separate staircases connect the cockpit to the flybridge, one for the helm and one for guests, which allows movement between levels without the constant negotiation of a single shared companionway. The flybridge accommodates up to eight people and combines a lounging area with the helm station in a modular layout that works equally well for social gatherings and quiet downtime. Forward of the mast, the front cockpit adds a third outdoor living zone with its own seating, coffee table and a swim ladder providing direct water access from the bow.
The extended transoms at the stern include a tender lift that converts into a bathing platform at anchor, sitting level with the water and wide enough to serve as a proper outdoor lounging area when the boat is moored. Under sail the Lagoon 51 is surprisingly responsive, tracking easily while remaining genuinely easy to handle, with boat speeds touching 8 knots in 10 to 12 knots of true wind.
