Discovering the archipelago of the Aeolian Islands

The Aeolian Islands - The 7 pearls of the Mediterranean

The Aeolian Islands, also called Lipari Islands, are an archipelago of volcanic origin, located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, north of the Sicilian coast. They include two active volcanoes, Stromboli and Vulcano, as well as various secondary volcanism phenomena. In the year 2000, the Aeolian Islands were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for volcanism.

Filicudi - The sleeper
In ancient times Filicudi was called Phoenicodes for the large number of ferns present on the island. Of great interest on this island is the presence of numerous, beautiful, sea caves.
Alicudi - The lonely one
Formerly called Ericusa, from the presence on the island of heather, a plant that still leaves on the slopes and inaccessible valleys of the volcanic cone that is now extinct.
Lipari -The heart of the archipelago
The most important and extensive of the Aeolian Islands. It is a volcanic island whose present appearance is the result of countless eruptions and very long periods of inactivity.
Vulcano - The ardent
The Island of Vulcano (fraction of Lipari) is an island of 21 square km belonging to the Aeolian Islands. The inhabitants, 715 in 2001, are called "vulcanari". In ancient times it was called Therasia, then Hiera, because it was sacred to the god Vulcan, hence its current name.
Salina - The sincere
Its name derives from a salt water pond located in the southern part of the island, which was once used as a salt pan. Famous for the production of Malvasia: a grape with "sun grain"
Panarea - The lava hearted diva
Formerly called Euonymos, the enchanting island has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Typical and romantic streets, without lighting, accessible only on foot or with the motorbike-bee.Stromboli - The good giant
Located in the Tyrrhenian basin of the western Mediterranean sea, the island is the northernmost of the Aeolian Islands and covers an area of 12.6 sq km.
