This seasonal wind typically appears from early July to mid August and can reach strong levels, sometimes up to 7 or 8 on the Beaufort scale. Outside this period, sailing conditions are generally calmer and ideal for discovering the islands at a relaxed pace.
Athens offers two main departure bases for sailing trips, Kalamaki Marina on the southern coast and Lavrion Marina on the eastern side of Attica. Lavrion is particularly convenient for Cyclades sailing itineraries, located only about 14 nautical miles from Kea, the gateway island to the archipelago.
This sailing itinerary begins in Lavrion and explores several nearby Cyclades islands, combining short sailing passages with time to enjoy beaches, traditional ports and the vibrant atmosphere of the Greek islands. Day1
Lavrion to Kea, Cyclades Sailing Start
Your Cyclades sailing itinerary from Lavrion begins on Saturday evening at Lavrion Marina, located on the eastern coast of Athens and one of the closest departure points for sailing in the Cyclades Islands. Before departure, guests typically use the morning and early afternoon to purchase food and supplies from the shops near the marina.
Set sail before 18:00 for a short passage across the Aegean Sea toward Kea Island, the gateway to the Cyclades. After a relaxed sail of about 14 nautical miles, the yacht reaches Koundouros Bay, one of the most scenic anchorages on the southwest coast of Kea. The bay offers clear waters for swimming and a peaceful setting for the first night at anchor. Koundouros is well protected from most winds but may be less suitable during rare southern wind conditions.
Day2
Kea to Mykonos Sailing Passage
On the second day prepare for one of the longest sailing legs of the journey, heading east across the Aegean Sea toward Mykonos Island. This passage of about 54 nautical miles usually takes up to 9 hours depending on wind conditions.
The prevailing Meltemi wind, blowing from the north during summer, often creates ideal beam reach sailing conditions. Before departure enjoy a morning swim in the turquoise waters of Koundouros Bay followed by breakfast on board.
As the yacht approaches the northern Cyclades, sailing conditions may become more energetic, as winds around Mykonos are often among the strongest in the region. Arrival in Mykonos Town is typically in the late afternoon. The evening can be spent exploring the famous harbor area, restaurants and nightlife that make Mykonos one of the most iconic destinations in Greece.
Day3
Explore Mykonos and Delos Island
Spend the day discovering Mykonos Island, one of the most famous destinations in the Cyclades. Guests can explore the whitewashed streets of Mykonos Town, relax at seaside cafés or visit nearby beaches along the island’s southern coast.
Another popular option is a short excursion to Delos Island, an important archaeological site and one of the most sacred islands of ancient Greece. Sailing around the nearby waters also offers beautiful swimming spots and scenic views of the surrounding Cyclades islands.
Day4
Mykonos to Paros Island Sailing
Continue your Cyclades island hopping cruise by sailing south toward Paros Island, one of the most charming islands in the Aegean. The sailing distance is relatively short, usually taking about 2 to 3 hours depending on wind conditions.
If departing early in the morning, the route may include a stop at Rhenia Island, a quiet islet known for its crystal clear waters and excellent swimming. Upon arrival in Paros, several mooring options are available depending on weather conditions. These include Naousa Harbor, the main port of Paroikia, or Livadi, which offers better protection during strong northern winds.
For a more relaxed atmosphere, the yacht may also visit Antiparos, a small island west of Paros known for its sandy beaches and laid back charm.
Day5
Paros to Serifos Island
After reaching the easternmost point of the itinerary, the route begins to turn west toward Serifos Island. This sailing leg usually takes about 6 to 7 hours, so an early departure is recommended in order to arrive around midday.
Serifos offers a picturesque harbor and a charming hilltop town overlooking the Aegean Sea. Mooring is typically available along the small pier near the harbor. In the evening, guests can climb to the village above the port where traditional tavernas and bars offer spectacular panoramic views across the Cyclades.
Day6
Serifos to Kythnos Island
The journey continues north toward Kythnos Island, another beautiful Cycladic destination known for its rugged landscapes and quiet bays. Sailing routes may vary depending on wind conditions, either passing along the eastern coast of Serifos or along the southern side before heading north.
Strong winds can occasionally create challenging sailing conditions in the channel between Serifos and Kythnos, especially during the Meltemi season. In these cases the captain may adjust the route to ensure safer navigation.
Upon arrival, the yacht may dock in Merichas Harbor, the island’s main fishing port, or anchor in the spectacular Kolona Bay, one of the most unique beaches in the Cyclades. Dinner ashore in Merichas offers an excellent opportunity to enjoy traditional Greek cuisine.
Day7
Kythnos to Lavrion Return
On the final day the yacht sails northwest back toward Lavrion Marina near Athens, completing the Cyclades sailing itinerary. Before departure guests can enjoy a swim in the famous Kolona Bay, known for its sandbar connecting two sides of the island.
Along the return route it is often possible to stop for a final swim in Sounion Bay, located beneath the historic Temple of Poseidon, one of the most spectacular coastal landmarks in Greece.
After this last swim stop, the yacht continues the short sail back to Lavrion Marina, marking the end of the Cyclades catamaran sailing adventure.
