A one week sailing journey from Palermo through the Aegadian Islands, combining offshore navigation, quiet anchorages, volcanic landscapes and traditional Sicilian coastal villages.
Starting from Palermo aboard a modern Elba 45 catamaran, this sailing itinerary explores the western coast of Sicily and the protected waters of the Aegadian archipelago. The route blends longer coastal passages with slower island hopping days, creating a balanced navigation rhythm suited to guests looking for both active sailing and relaxed time at anchor.
Leaving Palermo behind, the itinerary follows the rugged Sicilian coastline towards Castellammare del Golfo and the Zingaro Nature Reserve before crossing to the Aegadian Islands. Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo each offer a distinct atmosphere shaped by geography, maritime traditions and the pace of island life. Navigation alternates between open sea crossings and protected bays with calm turquoise waters ideal for swimming and snorkeling.
The sailing area is known for reliable summer winds, relatively short distances between islands and excellent visibility at sea. Days on board naturally revolve around navigation, meals outdoors, swim stops and evenings spent in small harbors or peaceful anchorages. Fishing villages, historic tuna processing sites and limestone coves create a sailing environment that remains deeply connected to Sicily’s maritime culture.
The Elba 45 catamaran, based in Palermo Marina La Cala, offers a stable and comfortable platform for exploring this part of the Mediterranean, particularly suited for island hopping itineraries and relaxed coastal cruising.
Itinerary
Day1
Boarding in Palermo and Sail to Castellammare del Golfo
Boarding takes place in Palermo during the afternoon, with time to settle onboard, organise luggage and meet the crew. After a short navigation and safety briefing, the catamaran departs westward along the northern Sicilian coastline. The first sailing leg offers views of Monte Pellegrino and the rocky shoreline surrounding Palermo before reaching the Gulf of Castellammare. Depending on sea conditions, the evening is spent at anchor near Cala Petrolo or inside Castellammare del Golfo harbor. Dinner onboard introduces the relaxed rhythm of life at sea.
Day2
Zingaro Coast and San Vito Lo Capo
After breakfast, navigation continues along the coastline of the Zingaro Nature Reserve. The route passes steep limestone cliffs, small sea caves and remote coves accessible mainly by boat. Swim stops are often planned near Cala dell’Uzzo or Cala Marinella where clear waters and rocky seabeds create excellent snorkeling conditions. In the afternoon, the catamaran reaches San Vito Lo Capo, a traditional fishing village surrounded by white beaches and mountain scenery. The evening can be spent ashore exploring the waterfront and local restaurants.
Day3
Offshore Crossing to Favignana
The day begins with a longer offshore navigation towards the Aegadian Islands. The crossing to Favignana usually covers around 20 nautical miles and introduces more open sea sailing conditions. Arrival is planned near Cala Azzurra or Cala Rossa, both known for transparent water and former tuff stone quarries carved into the coastline. The afternoon is dedicated to swimming, paddleboarding or simply relaxing onboard. Guests may also explore Favignana village and the historic Florio tuna factory connected to the island’s maritime heritage.
Day4
Coastal Sailing Around Favignana and Levanzo
A slower navigation day allows time to explore additional anchorages around Favignana before continuing north towards Levanzo. Short sailing distances create a relaxed pace with multiple swim stops possible throughout the day. Cala Minnola and Cala Tramontana offer sheltered waters and quiet surroundings ideal for snorkeling. Levanzo remains the smallest inhabited island of the archipelago, characterised by whitewashed houses and minimal road traffic. The evening is generally peaceful, spent either at anchor or near the small harbor.
Day5
Sailing to Marettimo
Leaving Levanzo behind, the itinerary continues west towards Marettimo, the wildest and most mountainous island in the archipelago. The navigation becomes more exposed and scenic, with deeper blue waters and dramatic coastal views approaching the island. Marettimo is surrounded by marine caves and steep cliffs shaped by volcanic and limestone formations. Depending on conditions, the catamaran anchors near Punta Bassana or enters the small harbor area. The village atmosphere remains quiet and traditional, with fishing boats and narrow streets defining the island’s character.
Day6
Marettimo Sea Caves and Return Towards Favignana
The morning is usually dedicated to exploring Marettimo’s coastline, where sea caves and hidden inlets create one of the most scenic marine environments in western Sicily. Tender excursions or local boats may access Grotta del Cammello or Grotta Perciata depending on sea conditions. After lunch onboard, the catamaran begins sailing back east towards Favignana or the Sicilian coastline. The return navigation offers time for sunbathing, reading and relaxed sailing before the final evening onboard.
Day7
Return Sailing to Palermo and Disembarkation
The final navigation leg follows the northern Sicilian coastline back towards Palermo. A final swim stop may take place near Capo Gallo or Isola delle Femmine before entering Palermo Marina La Cala in the afternoon. The evening is spent onboard in the marina, offering time for a final walk through Palermo’s historic center, dinner ashore or a relaxed last night on the catamaran. Breakfast onboard followed by check out and disembarkation within 9:00 AM at Palermo Marina La Cala.
Important Note This itinerary may vary depending on weather conditions, currents and marine activity. Dive sites and schedule are adjusted daily by the team to ensure safety and the best possible underwater experience.

Designed for comfortable long-range cruising, the Elba 45 combines generous outdoor living areas with balanced sailing performance. Its layout creates a relaxed onboard atmosphere suited to island hopping, coastal exploration and extended stays at anchor.
The Elba 45 is a modern sailing catamaran developed for guests looking for both comfort underway and practical liveability at anchor. The design focuses on fluid circulation between the cockpit, saloon and exterior lounge areas, creating an open onboard environment with natural ventilation and panoramic sea views. Large windows and wide openings bring light into the interior spaces while maintaining direct contact with the surrounding landscape.
The aft cockpit is organised as a social area for outdoor dining, sunset aperitifs and relaxed navigation days, while the elevated lounge spaces provide additional seating and sunbathing areas without isolating guests from the rest of the crew. The helm station remains connected to the cockpit, allowing smooth communication during manoeuvres and coastal sailing.
Below deck, the cabins are designed to maximise privacy and comfort during multi day cruises. The interiors offer generous storage, ensuite facilities in most configurations and a calm atmosphere suitable for overnight passages or extended itineraries. Different cabin layouts may be available depending on the charter configuration, including owner and guest cabin versions.
Under sail, the Elba 45 is appreciated for its stable navigation, balanced handling and efficient performance in typical Mediterranean and trade wind conditions. The catamaran remains easy to manage for both experienced sailors and fully crewed charter operations, offering a combination of steady cruising speed, spacious living areas and reliable comfort for longer voyages.

What to pack for a sailing holiday?
Pack smart for your yacht charter: choose a soft bag instead of a hard suitcase, bring lightweight layers, reef-safe sunscreen, and non-slip shoes for onboard use. A couple of swimsuits and motion sickness remedies can also make a big difference. Each boat has limited storage, so pack light, but wisely! Need help building the perfect list? What’s a Typical Day Like on a Yacht Charter?
Start your day with a swim in a quiet bay, sail to hidden beaches or seaside villages, and enjoy a slow lunch on deck. Afternoons mean snorkeling, sunbathing, or exploring ashore. As the sun sets, your boat anchors in a scenic cove or near a harbor, ready for a relaxed dinner and a night under the stars. Curious about the full experience? Who Handles Cooking and Cleaning on a Yacht Charter?
On skipper-only charters, guests usually share cooking and cleaning duties, think salads, pasta, and good teamwork. If there's a hostess, light meals and tidying are included, but it's still a casual, collaborative vibe. On fully crewed yachts, you’ll enjoy full service with a chef and crew managing everything. What Happens in Case of Bad Weather During a Sailing Holiday?
Summer sailing holidays rarely face major weather issues, but when the sea gets rough, skippers adjust the route for your safety. Expect protected bays, marina stops, or a change in plan. These moments often lead to unexpected gems: local towns to explore, time to relax on board, or cozy dinners ashore. Curious about how crews handle these changes?
