Your sailing trip
A 7-day sailing cruise departing from Cannigione in northern Sardinia, navigating the protected waters of the La Maddalena National Park, crossing the Strait of Bonifacio into Corsica and returning through the most celebrated anchorages of the archipelago including Budelli, Spargi and Caprera.
The sailing area between northern Sardinia and southern Corsica is one of the most geographically concentrated and naturally varied cruising grounds in the entire Mediterranean. Within a radius of roughly 40 nautical miles from Cannigione, the route passes through a national park protecting 62 islands and islets, crosses one of the most characterful straits in the western Mediterranean and reaches an uninhabited French marine reserve with granite pool anchorages that have no equivalent elsewhere in European sailing waters.
Cannigione sits at the head of the Gulf of Arzachena on the northeastern coast of Sardinia, a sheltered bay separated from the La Maddalena Archipelago by a short channel of open water. The village is the most practical base port for exploring the archipelago from the landward side, with provisioning, fuel, restaurants and transfer connections from Olbia Airport approximately 30 kilometers to the south. The gulf itself is calm and well protected, framed by the granite hills of the Gallura interior and the coastal scrubland of maquis and juniper that covers the northeastern Sardinian landscape down to the waterline.
The La Maddalena Archipelago is a national park designation covering the waters and land area of seven main islands and dozens of smaller islets between Sardinia and Corsica. The protection status has maintained the natural integrity of the area since 1994, and the combination of granite rock formations above and below the waterline, shallow turquoise water over white sandy seabeds and the near-complete absence of development on most of the islands produces a sailing environment increasingly rare in the central Mediterranean. Budelli, Razzoli, Santa Maria and Spargi are the northernmost islands of the group and the most remote from the main inhabited center of La Maddalena town, with anchorages accessible primarily by boat and a quality of natural solitude that the proximity of the Sardinian coast does not diminish.
The Strait of Bonifacio, the narrow passage of water separating Sardinia from Corsica, has been one of the most important maritime routes in the western Mediterranean since antiquity. The current that runs through the strait, the wind acceleration effect produced by the Mistral and Libeccio funneling between the two landmasses, and the dramatic limestone cliffs of the Corsican coast on the northern side combine to give the crossing a distinct navigational character that sailors remember independently of the rest of the itinerary. The Lavezzi Islands in French territorial waters immediately east of Bonifacio extend the granite and turquoise character of the Sardinian archipelago into Corsican waters, with the addition of the Cimetière des Naufrageurs, the cemetery on the main island that commemorates the wreck of the French frigate Sémillante in 1855 with the loss of 773 souls.

Travel organizer tips
Pack smart for your yacht charter: choose a soft bag instead of a hard suitcase, bring lightweight layers, reef-safe sunscreen, and non-slip shoes for onboard use. A couple of swimsuits and motion sickness remedies can also make a big difference. Each boat has limited storage, so pack light, but wisely! Need help building the perfect list? Start your day with a swim in a quiet bay, sail to hidden beaches or seaside villages, and enjoy a slow lunch on deck. Afternoons mean snorkeling, sunbathing, or exploring ashore. As the sun sets, your boat anchors in a scenic cove or near a harbor, ready for a relaxed dinner and a night under the stars. Curious about the full experience? Discover more in our guide: What’s a typical day like on a sailing holiday?
On skipper-only charters, guests usually share cooking and cleaning duties, think salads, pasta, and good teamwork. If there's a hostess, light meals and tidying are included, but it's still a casual, collaborative vibe. On fully crewed yachts, you’ll enjoy full service with a chef and crew managing everything. Want to know what’s included in your setup? Read the full guide: Who takes care of cooking and cleaning on a sailing charter?
Summer sailing holidays rarely face major weather issues, but when the sea gets rough, skippers adjust the route for your safety. Expect protected bays, marina stops, or a change in plan. These moments often lead to unexpected gems: local towns to explore, time to relax on board, or cozy dinners ashore. Curious about how crews handle these changes?
