About the Pacific Ocean

The Pacific Ocean is both the deepest and largest ocean in the world. It runs from the Arctic Ocean to the Sothern Ocean in the south. It is connected to Australia and Asia in the west and the Americas in the East. It makes up about 46 per cent of the Earth’s water surface. It is subdivided by the equator in the Northern Pacific Ocean and Southern Pacific Ocean. The Pacific was given its name in 1521 by the explorer Ferdinand Magellan. It means peaceful sea in both Spanish and Portuguese.

The Pacific Ocean was first sighted by Vasco Nunez de Balboa and is a great place to go on a cruise and discover more about this part of the world. Here are some interesting facts about the Pacific Ocean.

  • The deepest point of the Pacific Ocean is The Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, which was researched in 1875.
  • Several volcanoes form a ring around the basin of the ocean, called the Ring of Fire. Many earthquakes occur in this area due to the movement of tectonic plates and volcanic activity. There are over 75, 000 volcanos in the Pacific Ocean.
  • Temperatures differ across the Pacific Ocean, with the warmest waters being near the equator and the coldest near the poles.
  • There are over 25,000 islands found in the pacific, as well as many atolls found in warm waters – these are coral islands surrounded lagoons. One island found in the Pacific is Hawaii.
  • The Great Barrier Reef, a famous protected World Heritage site stretching 1,429 miles is located in the Pacific. It is the largest reef in the world.

  • The Pacific is shrinking at the rate of an inch a year because of the movement of tectonic plates. In contrast, the area of the Atlantic Ocean expands by the same distance each year.
